Testimonials

Volunteering at Askari has been, perhaps, the most rewarding experience of my life. I’ve seen so many amazing things and on top of that I’ve been a part of a huge, unique and very important (I believe) project concerning environmental initiatives. Being an environmental student, it has been exhilarating to see the work being done in Pidwa. I hope to see more places use the same approach as Askari Wilderness Conservation Programme. Our wild places are disappearing at an alarming rate, but Askari seems to be on the fore front of the battle against the loss of the wild. It’s been such a pleasure to be part of this. Conservation really came alive for me here. Such an inspiration. Thank...

Askari has been truly a life changing experience that’s made me reflect on my own career and future efforts in conservation. Askari has wonderfully knowledgeable staff and truly work hard to ensure that they have the ecosystem structure and function in mind within all aspects of the work day. From every level of ecology, individual, population and community and how their actions affect the environment. Askari truly cares for the restoration and conservation of the South African bushveld. I would highly recommend this volunteer opportunity for environmentalist students to expand their hard and soft skills here....

Being a third time returnee (with my 4th trip already booked) gives testament to how truly amazing, special and unique Askari is. I always feel lucky to have found this place, and the opportunities it has provided. Askari really encapsulates the purpose of conservation. You will leave here knowing the difference you’ve made; either through protecting trees, removing invasive plant species or through long term monitoring of birds of prey and other mega-fauna. Askari helps you to develop an appreciation for every wonderful moment the bush has to offer. From lioness and cubs, elephants to the beautiful birds and the more underrated such as Matabele ants crossing a road and an impressive weaver nest. I learn something new every time....

Dear Askari, As a volunteer, I thought I would be helping you, but in the most unexpected and awesome way you’ve changed my life. Thank you for the real life adventures, thank you letting me work alongside you and feel the satisfaction of helping to maintain your wonderful wildlife reserve, thank you for sharing your wisdom on conservation and animals, and much thanks for your great sense of humour. The animal interactions were unbelievable, so exciting and fun. I went to South Africa a bit apprehensive and unsure, and I came home with a new found understanding about wildlife and the world. Katie and Robbie, you are real life superheroes! Day to day I see numerous Social Media posts about animal plights...

My time at Askari never had a dull moment. I was involved with countless activities, jobs and moments I’ll never forget and Katie and Robbie made each of those experiences even better. Darting nyala, rewilding a cheetah, clearing Klip pan (slowly but surely) were just a few of the challenging, heartwarming and exciting things I did. Askari house holds so many memories ad Pidwa will always have a place in my heart. I hope to be back....

Places like this accommodate the part of us that desires simple beauty, adventure and the wild world. Here you can experience for yourself how the ecosystem functions and how you can play a role within it. It’s truly a one in a million opportunity that will impact you for many years to come....

Visiting Askari is like coming home, my second home. Good friends, great company, always something new to learn and love. It’s a privilege to be part, in a tiny way, of a team here and across the world trying to keep something wild alive and well in the Anthropocene. Thank you again, Katie, Robbie, Andrew and Ryan for being all round awesome role models in conservation commitment.  ...

A perfect balance of challenge and accomplishment. You don’t just learn things about the marvelous wildlife, you learn a ton about your own self too. A true adventure with the perfect people to guide you through it!...

Askari is an amazing programme that provides an unforgettable experience. Conservation work, an immense amount of learning and ID skills all happening in this awesome environment led by such outstanding and caring individuals. I’ll never forget my time here or the people I spent it with....

This was my second time at Askari and like I thought, it was as extraordinary and meaningful as the first time. Just the fact that there are so many returnees really shows how Askari has impacted all of us. The thirst for Africa is in the little things. It starts when you wake up to see the sunrise and hear the birds singing their daily lullaby. It’s in the eyes, filled with passion for the bush of the amazing people that are Katie & Robbie. It’s at the end of a long day, when you can feel the ache in your arms, but still smile knowing you made a difference. It’s in the sound of the lions at night, roaring...
