Testimonials

As a first time volunteer, Askari has set the bar extremely high. It has been refreshing to ignore the ‘real world’ and meet like-minded and passionate people, who want to help preserve the important parts of life. Thank you to Katie, Robbie and all the Askari team for the constant dedication and willingness to educate. It has been an incredible adventure and look forward to seeing you next year!...

Askari is a wonderful place, you’ll see animals in a new light and appreciate the wilderness. Katie and Robbie are there to give you the best experience and they give vast effort and enthusiasm. AND the friends you make are wonderful....

This was my very first time in Africa – and what a wonderful way in! First of all, I came here to discover southern Africa wildlife, and my expectations were fulfilled. What a pleasure to see the animals in the bush, in the most natural habitat a game reserve can provide. Jumping in the game viewer each morning is like heading for an adventure, not knowing what you would find. Also the “no off-roading” policy means that you do not disturb the animal. If he/she wants to stay a while with you, he/she stays on the road and if not, he/she vanishes into the bush. All that makes each and every sighting and incredible moment, when you feel close to...

Askari continues to be an incredible experience and each trip inspires and amazes me. It is so rewarding to be part of a project that really delivers tangible conservation efforts and when you return you’re able to see work done in previous trips making a difference in restoring the land and wildlife to its original state. Thank you for all the hard work and opportunities you provide to us volunteers – long may it continue!...

This is my third visit in three years. I keep coming back because of the expert staff, from whom I learn new skills and insights into conservation at the coal face every year. I keep coming back because Pidwa is a special reserve with a strong spirit. I keep coming back because I enjoy meeting new volunteers, most of them young, who give me confidence and hope about protecting our wildlife and habitats on a crowded planet. Every year I have a great time and trust it will not be the last....

As an older person I was a little hesitant as I embarked on my Askari experience. I need not have worried as I managed everything perfectly and was made to feel part of a young team at all times. The experience is intense and exhilarating at the same time. Katie and Robbie are extremely efficient and organised. I left Askari feeling like I’d gained a lifetime of knowledge in only 2 weeks. This is despite the fact that I am South African and have been to many game reserves around South Africa. Katie & Rob, I have so much respect for what you do and thank you so much for putting up with my “old lady” stuff. I loved swimming...

It’s difficult to summarise Askari but I will try. Breath taking views, hands on conservation, assisting vet, security and longevity of fences, alien plant control, protection of trees, manual labour, gathering research information along with many animal and bird sightings, and not forgetting the beautiful sunsets. The team are very focused, approachable, hard-working and informative. Their enthusiasm is infectious. This has been my first trip to Africa and I definitely chose the best volunteer group. Throughout my time at Askari I met a few volunteers from other projects and Askari still stands out as they put a lot of effort in to educate volunteers and involve them in as much as possible. Even with fun and relaxing activities you’re still...

I don’t know how to start. This experience was one of the best in my life. If I could give an advice it would be to stay more than one month. There are too many activities we would like to do twice (bush walk…tracking…) and we don’t have time in one month. Future volunteers: if you decide to come to Askari you will find an amazing staff full of knowledge, passionated by the bush, who first want to share good moments. You will learn so many things about wildlife, nature, conservation. You will see a lot of different animals and above all you will feel useful. Be prepared to live and incredible and unforgettable experience. Robbie, Katie, as I told...

I hardly know where to start but Askari isn’t a basic volunteer project. It’s my second time in Askari and I’m always glad to be involved in this amazing experience. It’s not just a basic eco-volunteer, it’s much more than that, real work for conservation and you can see the challenge of African reserves. How they manage it and the importance of preservation of different animals, birds, trees, insects. It isn’t only Big 5 conservation because the most insignificant thing may have consequences on the nature. My time at Askari was indescribable, amazing, a dream. This experience gave me a lot of knowledge and a family. Robbie and Katie are incredible managers in this reserve and I had a lot...

My 2nd trip to Askari and each time I’m blown away – love what they do here and how they do it. You learn so much and the staff are fun and informative. Great to have an opportunity to be involved and contribute in some small way. My happy place.  ...
