If there is a small quote which describes my stay in Askari that would be “Volunesia – The moment you forget you’re volunteering to help change lives, because it’s changing yours”. During my stay in Askari I learned a lot of things. Not only about the bush but about people. Askari gave me the opportunity to appreciate the values of respect, hard work and friendship. Specially working for the animals reminds you how small you are and that you have to stay humble. Spending a month in Askari gives you more as a person than the work you can give to the reserve. Working hard is always paid with awesome sightings and great sunsets. If anyone has the opportunity to...

Best experience ever! This programme was way better than I expected. Activities are fun and interesting, staff is so nice and people I’ve met here are a new family. If you love nature, animals and want to learn about it and give your time to contribute to wildlife, you shouldn’t hesitate anymore! The place where you live is in the bush, away from all (almost) human activities: it is the most peaceful place I’ve ever been, with people I will never forget. I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys living a pure life, in a magic place where animals are kings, and people try to help them. A huge thank you to Katie & Ed, I will miss you!  ...

My time at Askari was wonderful! Amazing staff people who have made every day a good day, I have learn to know new people during my stay from different countries. Really nice, you become a family together! Work at Askari is very nice and you learn a lot during your stay. I can say that I have learned more here than back home at my school. It’s not always hard work, sometimes you do fun work, because it is fun. Also it is amazing that you stay in the reserve, at any time there could be an animal around the corner J If you’re lucky you can see a lot of animals, even the big 5. I loved my time...

First of all I really want to thank Constance of the agency who has been very helpful for preparing my trip here. It is thanks to her that I am here living this wonderful experience. Secondly a big thank you to Katie and Ed who make you at home at the first moment. They were very welcoming and I got into the ‘ambience’ very fast. I have learned many things about the biodiversity and the animals through their explanations and they were always happy to answer all our questions. Now I have a different opinion about the hyaenas and I appreciate and admire all the wild animals even more. As an animal lover, seeing all these creatures so close to...

This experience was just perfect! We saw a lot of animals, worked to help the wilderness conservation programme and learnt a lot of things about trees, nature and animals. Ed and Katie are great people! They’re passionate about their work and are always there to answer questions or share any experience and stories about the bush. The house, the schedule and the activities were amazing and interesting. I wished that experience could change my life ……! I hope to come back next year and make the bush school because of this. Katie and Ed stay like you are! You’re a perfect team! I’m really happy I met you....

I arrived at Askari without any knowledge of conservation, nor of diverse animals and protection. In the last 6 weeks I have acquired so much knowledge which I made my stay that much more interesting and intriguing. Every piece of knowledge that I could remember and recite was welcomed with cheer from Katie and Ed. Their enthusiasm together with the love of work and daily experiences makes the whole adventure ever so more exciting. The work that we did was always with Katie & Ed, the managers, which gave us a feeling of working as a team. Here in Askari, they are trying to make a change in wildlife and I am walking away with a feeling of accomplishment to...

I think there are not enough words to thank you both for these three months, My project on hyaenas has been very enriching and I think this is one of the projects that have me most passionate in my little life. It is incredible because you pass on your passions and we become passionate. I never thought I would learn so many birds in three months or learn to recognize the tracks of animals or participate in the reintroduction of a cheetah or put camera traps to identify hyaenas. No words in English, or French, are enough to say how much I thank you for this adventure in the bush. I know sometimes it was not evident to talk with me...

The 6 weeks I volunteered at Askari is amongst the best experiences I have had in my life. I felt that I was making a contribution in a place of integrity where conserving wilderness and all that it encompasses is the most important goal. The programme was well balanced with a wide range of activities and always fun. I learned a huge amount about many subjects and aspects, some that were entirely new to me and often thought provoking. I found the staff to be inspirational. Their passion, their infectious joy, their belief in what they are doing, their involvement and working alongside the volunteers in each activity, their patience and tireless willingness to explain, teach, discuss and answer any...

It’s difficult to fully describe my time here. The month seems to have flown and remembering all that we’ve done and see in just one month is likely impossible. However there are also things I will never be able to forget from the elephants in the river to the snake in our bedroom. I was so nervous, so doubtful about coming here. I thought I’d be ready to leave after four weeks but here’s the thing about Askari – it’s not leaving behind a house full of strangers in the middle of nowhere. It’s like leaving behind a new found family and a home in what you will realise is one of the most phenomenal places on earth. Katie and...

It was a special honour to be able to experience Askari even if only for a brief slice of time. Two weeks isn’t long enough…. The thing that stands out most, aside from seeing some of the coolest creatures I have seen in my life, is the people: passionate and knowledgeable staff/guides and volunteers from all over the world who have come for the same reason – to experience the South African bush but more than that, to contribute to the restoration and conservation of it. That is what sets Askari apart from anything else I have done. That is what gives travel here a deeper significance. And the fact that we have over 17,000 hectares of wild space to ourselves...
