I think there are not enough words to thank you both for these three months, My project on hyaenas has been very enriching and I think this is one of the projects that have me most passionate in my little life. It is incredible because you pass on your passions and we become passionate. I never thought I would learn so many birds in three months or learn to recognize the tracks of animals or participate in the reintroduction of a cheetah or put camera traps to identify hyaenas. No words in English, or French, are enough to say how much I thank you for this adventure in the bush. I know sometimes it was not evident to talk with me...

The 6 weeks I volunteered at Askari is amongst the best experiences I have had in my life. I felt that I was making a contribution in a place of integrity where conserving wilderness and all that it encompasses is the most important goal. The programme was well balanced with a wide range of activities and always fun. I learned a huge amount about many subjects and aspects, some that were entirely new to me and often thought provoking. I found the staff to be inspirational. Their passion, their infectious joy, their belief in what they are doing, their involvement and working alongside the volunteers in each activity, their patience and tireless willingness to explain, teach, discuss and answer any...

It’s difficult to fully describe my time here. The month seems to have flown and remembering all that we’ve done and see in just one month is likely impossible. However there are also things I will never be able to forget from the elephants in the river to the snake in our bedroom. I was so nervous, so doubtful about coming here. I thought I’d be ready to leave after four weeks but here’s the thing about Askari – it’s not leaving behind a house full of strangers in the middle of nowhere. It’s like leaving behind a new found family and a home in what you will realise is one of the most phenomenal places on earth. Katie and...

It was a special honour to be able to experience Askari even if only for a brief slice of time. Two weeks isn’t long enough…. The thing that stands out most, aside from seeing some of the coolest creatures I have seen in my life, is the people: passionate and knowledgeable staff/guides and volunteers from all over the world who have come for the same reason – to experience the South African bush but more than that, to contribute to the restoration and conservation of it. That is what sets Askari apart from anything else I have done. That is what gives travel here a deeper significance. And the fact that we have over 17,000 hectares of wild space to ourselves...

My experience at Askari has been nothing short of incredible. I never imagined that I would learn so much about the bush or meet such an amazing group of people from around the world. From sleeping out under the stars, to helping with veterinary dartings, to lugging rocks out of mines for elephant protection, there was never a dull moment during my two months here. Ed and Katie are so knowledgeable and welcoming and have made my experience here such a positive one. To anyone who is on the fence about coming to Askari, I cannot recommend the program enough....

My boyfriend and I found Askari after a lot of research and thought it was perfect / exactly what we were looking for. We couldn’t be happier we chose it. The place, the people, environment and the Askari project are all truly amazing and so special. We are sad to say goodbye but know we will be back. All the activities day to day allow you to see what an impact you are making and it is very rewarding. You work hard and are rewarded with amazing animal sightings. Katie and Ed are amazing, very talented at what they do and are extremely knowledgeable. We were always learning no matter what we were doing. We’ve made some lifelong friends here that...

My third trip to Askari proved to be even more incredible and memorable than I could have ever hoped for. To be able to return and continue to learn about the bush and enjoy new experiences is what makes Askari so special. Katie and Ed – this experience would be nothing without the passion, enthusiasm and knowledge that you both bring to the programme. Thank you both so much for everything – I can’t wait to come back again next year!!...

The time I have spent here has honestly been a game-changer. Not only have I learnt lots of valuable knowledge about the bush but I have made some great friendships which I hope to keep for a long time. The activities are fulfilling and make you truly feel like you are making a difference. I will be spreading the word about Askari as I truly think this is an experience which everyone who is interested in conservation should look into. Friday night braais, sundowners and the rhino race made all the hard work we’d been doing on the reserve really worth a celebration. Katie and Ed – I cannot thank you enough for everything you’ve done, you are a credit to Askari. I...

This was a big challenge for my disabled son Tom and he was apprehensive on the trip over from Australia. But Ed, Katie and Andrew made his stay rewarding and helped to get Tom into a good comfort zone within a day or so. So grateful to them for welcoming Tom and being so patient, explaining things to him and encouraging him to join in. As for me, my second stay with Askari was even more special than my first. The sightings of rare and rarely seen animals was a bonus and the lion kill - a once in a lifetime privilege. But all that would be nothing – what makes Askari so special are the staff, the fun volunteers and...

#itchangedmylife Amazing to be part of such a wonderful group and programme. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. The level of enthusiasm is unbeatable. Askari has been the most amazing trip and I have learnt so much. They really teach and show the importance of conservation. I am super excited knowing I’ll return next year. It was so incredible that I couldn’t leave without knowing when I would return. Katie and Ed – you guys are just incredible and I feel privileged to have spent time with you both, thank you for everything!...
