Volunteering at Askari truly is an eye opening and life changing experience. after studying biology at uni I spent a few years not really knowing which direction I wanted to take my life in. 3 months volunteering at Askari has changed that and re-ignited my passion for the natural world, inspiring me to return and complete a guiding course as soon as I am able. Every day is a learning experience here and I couldn’t recommend Askari highly enough, anyone and everyone should take time out to experience the beauty of the African bush. It will not be forgotten or regretted....

I spent 4 weeks at Askari and it was not enough, I needed more. I didn’t study anything related to wildlife conservation but I’ve always been interested in it so I decided to do this programme for 4 weeks. During my stay in SA I only stayed at Askari, no beaches, no Cape Town, but I would do it again. It was amazing! In the orientation week I’ve learnt a lot about conservation, animal management and then we put that all into practice. You really feel you are helping and doing a lot for maintaining the correct habitat for the animals. Katie an Ed are wonderful people, with them around you always feel good and they will answer all your...

As someone who has never spent more than two weeks away. From home I arrived very nervous for what the next three months would be like and now I don’t want to go home. every day out her is different and filled with new knowledge and experience. I’ve never felt more at home. I cannot thank Katie and Ed enough for helping to provide this amazing adventure. I’d highly recommend everyone to do this once in their life. It really highlights what’s important in life....

Everything I have experienced during my stay has been amazing. Each day is different and Katie and Ed go out their way to ensure we gain as much as possible. When I read the website about responsible volunteers I knew their morals were in the right place. This has been proven to me whilst I’ve been here. The passion and love for the bush is expressed when tracking lions to looking at leaf formation. I fully support the work carried here and would encourage others to join....

At Askari I learnt not to fear the wild animals anymore but to respect them. I found freedom in the wilderness among lovely creatures of all sorts. Ed and Katie abound in knowledge and love for the wilderness and that is contagious! A big Big BIG thank you!! Thank you guys for helping us with everything. The most enjoyable experience of all was the sleep out! I admire your knowledge and attitude, which I am taking with me back home.  ...

The Askari programme is a genuine one. Katie and Ed are doing a fantastic job for the Pidwa reserve. Their knowledge is incredible and they share it with the volunteers with great enthusiasm. This was just an interlude in my life, between jobs but I feel I’m taking away an experience that will affect my life....

Feeling like home is the best way to describe my stay at Askari. Askari, it’s been a pleasure to be part of your family. I will always remember all the experiences, the new knowledge and the people in Askari. I never experienced such a high level of happiness before for such a long period of time. My seven weeks here have been amazing. Every morning you wake up not knowing what’s going to happen, but knowing it’s going to be an unforgettable day. We had the opportunity to experience incredible sightings with the team. I learned more than I ever imagined: tracking animals, birding and capturing amazing pictures. Askari, thank you for everything. I will never forget you! ‘take only memories, leave...

I had a wonderful adventure in Askari. It is a rewarding experience. The staff is very friendly, there is a great atmosphere and you feel very comfortable at Askari! I’m very proud to have participated in this beautiful project. Thanks to Katie and Ed for everything....

I spent two weeks at Askari and I enjoyed every minute. Katie, Ed, all the staff and volunteers are amazing and this place (Pidwa) is amazing. The sleep out in the reserve, all the laughs we had and taking care of all the animals will always be in my memories. I will miss the Askari’s good vibes for a very long time.  ...

If there is a small quote which describes my stay in Askari that would be “Volunesia – The moment you forget you’re volunteering to help change lives, because it’s changing yours”. During my stay in Askari I learned a lot of things. Not only about the bush but about people. Askari gave me the opportunity to appreciate the values of respect, hard work and friendship. Specially working for the animals reminds you how small you are and that you have to stay humble. Spending a month in Askari gives you more as a person than the work you can give to the reserve. Working hard is always paid with awesome sightings and great sunsets. If anyone has the opportunity to...
